Kate’s heart started to beat. She was wanted, and the rendezvous wasn’t a long drive away. Should she meet this man? Her groin pulsating, she had already made her decision.
*****************************
Today was like any other day at school. Kate printed her resources, wrote her to-do list and got ready for her lessons. Each lesson was prepared individually, which took an inordinate amount of time since she gave her very all to everyone. Somehow though, something always seems to go wrong.
Ben, her boss, came to see her.
“Kate. Did you see my email?”
“No, I didn’t, what did it say?” She replied.
Ben sighs.
“It said that you needed to get the cover work sorted for Sarah!”. Ben sighed in frustration again.
Kate moved closer to Ben.
“Ben, I’m sorry. I read that email, and I’ve sorted it.”
Kate cursed herself. Why was she always so forgetful?
“Thank you Kate. Sorry, I get a bit on edge sometimes. There’s a lot of pressure on us at the moment” Ben said.
“It’s okay, Ben. Sorry if I created extra stress; emails are the bane of my life.” Kate replied.
Kate knew how important discipline was as part of her job. She prided herself on that; her determination was her best skill. But, somehow, things never worked out the way they were supposed to.
Kate had felt a disconnect from teaching for some time now. Her guilt was consuming and confusing.
During her three years in teaching, she had been taught that the children always came first. That their outcome was paramount as their teacher. This kind of work ethic came very easily to Kate; she was highly empathetic. She cared immensely for all of the children she taught, and the children loved her in return.
But, teaching was sapping the life out of Kate. It was making her mentally sick, which in turn was causing health problems, too. It was time to hand her notice in.
As Kate left work that same day, her mind raced. What would the children think? What about her colleagues? She knew the children would be devastated, especially the younger ones.
Why did she feel so guilty for putting herself first? Kate had always found it difficult putting herself first, whether that was in her professional or personal life. She was a huge people pleaser, she felt a strong sense of ensuring justice and fairness, and yet she couldn’t do the same for herself.
Kate plonked herself down on her sofa when she finally got home. She loved her little flat. It was perfect for her now single life and her cats. Was she a crazy cat lady now!?
Out of nowhere, Kate got a text message on her phone from a number she didn’t recognise.
“What? Who is this?” Kate muttered to herself.
The text read:
Hi Kate. I want to play a game. If you follow my instructions to the dot… There will be a reward at the end for you… One that I KNOW you won’t be able to refuse. If you want to play this game with me, your first instruction is to simply reply to this message with “Pleasure me”, and we can get started.
‘M’
*****************************
It was 9am on Monday morning. Kate dragged herself out of bed ready to make her favourite drink from her coffee machine.
Gone are the days of the fifty-hour weeks. The days when Kate would put everything into her job, at the sake of her own mental health.
Kate had handed her notice in at work over seven weeks ago now, and it was now the summer holidays. Nowadays, Kate’s days involved online tuition, taking the bins out and making sure the lawn was mown. It was a mediocre life at best.
Some weeks had passed since Kate had received that intriguing and almost ominous text message. The amount of time she’d spent mulling over what she should do was ridiculous.
On the one hand, who in the right mind would actually reply to that sort of message? But, on the other hand, Kate was highly intrigued and secretly craved the excitement that that message had created.
The butterflies pulsated through Kate once again. When she’d first received that message, the dominating nature of the message left her tingling. Even moreso, that fact that “M” had requested she reply with “Pleasure me” really took her pulses up a notch.
Was now the time that she should follow her gut and reply?
Kate sat with her coffee for some time, mulling over what to do. Eventually, Kate bit the bullet and started composing a message.
*****************************
It had been about twenty-four hours since Kate had replied to “M”s message. Kate was filling her time with her tutoring; she was trying to focus on her professional work. It was going well – she’d received positive feedback from the work she had done, and nothing meant more to her.
As Kate sat at her desk, on this early Friday evening, she marked her students’ work, and provided feedback to her students.
But, Kate couldn’t fully focus, as her mind often wandered towards “M”. The twinges between her legs, heat rising through her body; she knew she had to push them away.
Kate scolded herself for letting someone have even just a slither of a hold on her.
“Who was he? Why did he pick me?” She thought to herself.
He hadn’t replied yet. She didn’t expect a quick reply from him, either. Kate knew he liked to play games, and this was one of them. One of many games she knew he’d play on her.
In fact, feelings of frustration bubbled away inside her. She felt indignant. Who was he to tell her what to do? For God’s sake, why had she put herself in this ridiculous situation?
Moreso, she was a teacher. She was the person to command and tell others what to do! What the hell was she doing?
Kate poured herself a glass of wine, now. It was early evening, and the sun was setting. Kate drew the curtains in her living room, ready to settle in for the evening.
Low and behold, M replies.
What a good girl you are. I knew you’d reply. How could you not have? I know you love the thrill and tease. I know you more than you realise.
Your next command is to turn the lights off in the room you’re in. Don’t even think about asking why, just do it.
When you look out of your window, you’ll see a light shining in the sky. It’ll look like a spotlight beam. A bat-signal, if you will. Except, you’re not about to rescue someone, you’re about to rescue yourself, if you go, that is.
That beam of light; you need to find it. Find it – get in your car now and drive towards it. If you do, you’ll get the answers you’re looking for, and the next piece of the puzzle.
“What in the world…?” Kate muttered to herself.
She hadn’t heard anything so ridiculous in her life. Did this “M” really think she would even follow through with this? He was crazy!
Kate’s mind flooded with questions. Firstly, if she did look out of her patio doors, would she see this so-called ‘light’? As preposterous as it sounded, and she did see this ‘magical beam of light’, wouldn’t the rest of the general population also see it?
“Did he actually think I was that stupid?” Kate announced to herself.
Kate swallowed her wine, turned up her TV and slammed her phone down. As her glass was empty, Kate plodded to the kitchen to top it up.
Her cats milled around her feet. They could tell something was wrong, they always could. Kate dropped some treats into their bowls, enjoying watching them scoff them down.
Her wine topped up; Kate leaned against the worktop. She pressed her glass against her chest, allowing its coolness to sooth her flustered state.
The heat and anxiety rising inside Kate had come as a surprise. She’d had no idea how much M’s message had affected her.
Kate turned her gaze out of her kitchen window. The sunset still looked beautiful, and she could still hear her cats crunching on the treats she’d put down.
Mulling over the text from M, she realised that she wouldn’t see the beam he mentioned until after dark, surely?
Justifying this to herself, Kate took herself back to her sofa, plonked herself down and put her favourite film on: The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring.
Time ticked away. Kate watched it get dark outside through the sliver between her curtains. Her cats had settled down and were in deep slumber now. That made her happy.
The wine was starting to relax her now. She felt its warm glow in her belly. Then, a naughty thought planted itself in Kate’s mind. She’d recently bought a new toy and wanted to try it out. The wine had definitely loosened Kate up a bit.
Slowly, Kate slid her hand down the front of her jeans. Her fingers slowly caressing her clitoris through her knickers. It felt good.
“Mmm” Kate moaned.
Suddenly, there was a bang that startled her. Her silly cat had knocked something off the mantlepiece. It brought Kate right back to reality.
“Damnit.” Kate muttered.
The evening’s events came flooding back, now. M’s stupid message was back in the forefront of Kate’s mind.
The last thing Kate wanted to do was to leave the house, let alone have to drive somewhere. But, there was an invisible force drawing her to her patio doors. Kate fought the pull that was willing her towards the panes of glass.
“Fuck it.” Kate exclaimed.
Thrusting open her curtains, Kate searched the sky in seconds.
Nothing.
There was nothing.
No light beam, no ‘bat-signal’; Kate couldn’t even hear a dog barking as was the usual; there was nothing.
How could she have been so stupid? How had she fallen for a stupid game that this person, someone that supposedly knew her, had played on her?
But, then, something caught her eye.
Kate froze. Her heart started racing. Had she imagined it?
It was like someone was flashing a light through a mirror into her eye; not the beam of light she was expecting. Maybe a torch being shone into a piece of glass, even.
Squinting, Kate tried to focus on where the flickering was coming from. It was bright; blinding.
The shining light was coming from what seemed to be a garden across from her flat. Not from the sky, as she was led to believe. This was no ‘bat-signal’. Fences and houses created a barrier between her eyes and the location of the reflection. She’d have to get dressed and walk there if she wanted to investigate.
“Okay. A child is doing this. They’re playing with their toys, and it’s causing a reflection, completely innocently.” Kate rationalised to herself.
“This is completely ridiculous!” She told herself.
No sane woman would think that a child playing with their games and think this had anything to do with M. In fact, no sane woman would even entertain this ridiculous notion that M had created, most probably to trap her.
Kate was done. She’d had enough of the mind games that M was playing; she hadn’t asked for this.
Kate fired off a message to M in her anger.
“I don’t want to know the next pieces of the puzzle. I don’t want to play your games. I’m done with you manipulating me.”
No sooner had she sent the text message, Kate’s phone buzzed with a reply.
“You sure about that, Kate? Are you sure you don’t want to know the reason why I got in touch with you? The reason why I chose you? The reason why you replied in the first place… that you secretly love being told what to do? The reason why you want to know who I am, and how I know so much about you? Let yourself go. Give in to me. I know you are burning for me. You want it. I know you want it. I want you.”
*****************************
It was Monday, now. The agency she’d signed up to recently for supply work had called her this morning. As such, she was driving to school, ready to teach.
Forty-eight hours had passed since that eventful Friday evening that had started off so innocently for her.
The tutoring marking, the relaxing glasses of wine, her slumbering cats, and the teasing touches that Kate had indulged in, seemed so far away now. That evening should have been a blissful and enjoyable one.
But, it hadn’t been that way. M’s response had broken down every part of Kate. Emotionally, psychologically, and physically. How the hell was M able to have this impact on her?
“Why have I fallen for M’s stupid games again?” Kate berated herself for the umpteenth time.
Nevermind, Kate was nearly at work now, and she knew she must focus on her job.
After walking the distance from the car park to her classroom, Kate logged into the computer. Although she was classed as a ‘supply teacher’, she’d been given a laptop and regular classes. She was responsible for all of the things a ‘normal’ teacher would be.
She loaded up her emails, the lessons plans for the day, and registers.
Checking her emails, there were the usual bulletins, updates and general information emails. However, there was an email that didn’t follow the usual deluge Kate normal got.
Kate clicked on the most recent result that had come from the IT department:

“What is this all about? Who is ‘M.Hendon’?” Kate asked herself.
As far as she knew, no-one outside of the school knew her work email address. Plus, the only way to find it would be when searching for her name in the recipient box.
Kate had only been at this school a few weeks. There was no-one that she could think of that could possibly know her work email address.
“Hold on a second!” Kate exclaimed.
The sender’s first initial was ‘M’. Could this be the M, the one that had been playing a game with her for some weeks now? If it was, how could he have found out her work email address? The only way this could be was that M worked at this school. Or, possibly a disgruntled parent of one of the children she taught. Kate knew that it was possible to find out their children’s teachers, as it was sent when she set online homework.
If it wasn’t either of those, if someone was so inclined, they may have figured out her email address and emailed on a whim, taking the chance that she would receive it. After all, most workplace emails tend to follow a set pattern nowadays.
The fact that the email had been quarantined meant that either the sender, or the contents of the email, had been flagged up by the school’s IT system. Kate wondered if the IT team (well, the two people that dealt with IT issues) knew about this email. She knew that if the children were using their accounts suspiciously, the IT team definitely knew about it. Kate wondered if this email had already been flagged to anyone.
This was the last thing Kate needed, first thing before a full teaching day.
“I can’t deal with this right now. I’ll look at this later.” Kate muttered to herself.
Kate got on with her day, pushing M’s email from her mind completely.
Before she knew it, her school day was over and she was tidying her room after the last class had left. Her room was surprisingly tidy for a Tuesday.
The children had been pretty well behaved, and seemed to be warming up to her now. It was always hard coming into a school mid-way through a term. It took longer for the children to warm up to her, she had found. She knew it would be an uphill battle trying to win over the more difficult students, at least until Christmas.
“Oh, yes. That stupid email.” Kate remembered.
On the one hand, Kate really wanted to open the email. On the other hand, whatever was inside this email could risk her job. Kate was dying to read it.
Cursing herself for being so weak, Kate didn’t think twice.
Tentatively, she clicked on the link that allowed her to review the contents of the email.

Subject: For your eyes only
Dear Kate,
How are you? I trust your Tuesday is going well, and the kids are treating you with kindness.
I bet you’re wondering how I managed to get your email. Another mystery for you, I’m sure. I love playing games with you. All will become clear lovely Kate, but only when I choose it.
You didn’t think you’d get off that lightly, though, did you? Your childish message back, your stubbornness. You aren’t getting away from me that easily.
At first, my heart skipped a beat when you thanked me for my second, teasing message, and that you were looking forward to finding out more. But, as I read on, and you explained that you wanted to play a game with me, I was left disappointed in you.
You must know – you’re not the one holding the cards here, Kate. I know more about you than you probably know about yourself.
You see, I’ve been in your life a long time, you just didn’t know it. I was there when you left your old job, and I was there when you started tutoring. I know about every recent situation you have found yourself in.
*****************************
Kate had to pause reading the email for a minute. She needed time to digest what M had said to her so far.
If what M had said was true, then he must be a bigger part of her life than she had ever realised. Kate mulled over who was in her life right now that knew about her recent employment stints. It must be someone quite close to her since she hadn’t told many people about them. Kate didn’t even have that many friends or family. Her circle was small.
Kate started to think about possible people it could be. First off, she’d assumed that M was male. Most of the people in her life were female, or those close to her, anyway. Could M possibly be a female? The way that M wrote sounded male, or so she thought.
“OK. There’s Lois and Ellie.” Thought Kate.
Those were her two closest friends. Lois worked at her old school with her, in her department. Ellie was a long time friend she’d met before she started teaching. Ellie and Kate’s relationship went back nearly 10 years.
“Surely it couldn’t be either of them? No, it can’t be a woman; it can’t be Lois or Ellie.” Kate reflected.
Although she wasn’t completely sure it wasn’t them, Kate moved on and pushed them out of her mind.
Now, Kate started to think about the men in her life. M had, quite firmly, told her that they had been there during recent job changes in her life. M clearly liked control, suggesting that they were in some position of power. Although, she could be wrong with this, too.
Mind whirring, Kate thought about her last workplace. This was the one she had left before moving onto tutoring. Could it be her last boss, Ben, who always seemed so stressed by her? She’d left because of the workload. Maybe he was angry at her for leaving? Kate had been vocal about some of the issues that that place had; didn’t fit in there.
But, Kate really couldn’t envision Ben being so manipulative and controlling. Yes, he got frustrated at her, but it was only because he was a high achiever and worked differently to her. No, it couldn’t be Ben.
Next, Kate thought about her brief stint tutoring. The tutoring was to help keep her mind busy during the summer holidays, whilst bringing in a bit of money. After all, boredom was Kate’s worst enemy. She’d found tutoring vacancies online and applied for a few. Kate remembered that she’d had to weed through quite a few adverts, some more legitimate than others.
Only one of them had actually accepted her into their agency. The person she’d dealt with was called Will. He’d taken her through the interview stages, all the way to the onboarding stage. Will had gotten her tutoring positions, both online and in person. She’d been very thankful to him at the time. Will also seemed like a genuinely nice person.
Thinking about Will now, although unlikely, he did know her recent employment history. He had her phone number and personal email address, but didn’t know where she currently worked. But, he hadn’t come across as bossy or controlling in any way; only friendly and supportive.
“Who is M?!” Kate asked herself, even more frustrated than before.
Kate decided to go back to the email. She was only half way down the message.
I can tell you now, Kate, that you wanting to play a game with me won’t work. In your message, you said that you would do everything I asked of you, but only if you told me who I am. You don’t get to make demands like that.
Trust me, I was very tempted to give you a little snippet about me. Kate, you’ve been such a good girl so far. But I wasn’t ready to do this over our entertaining text exchanges.
However, I’m now ready to extend an olive branch to you. I’m going to offer you a clue about me, as I know you secretly and desperately want to know who I am.
So, here is your clue:
I am strong and ancient. My pieces have seen centuries of history and pain. People look to me for comfort, but I am cold. What am I?
Figure this out, and you’ll be able to find me.
